The constructive sequel to The Black Swan. Having established that tail events cannot be predicted, Taleb answers the obvious question — then what? — with a design principle: build things that gain from volatility. Fragility, unlike probability, is measurable; convexity can be engineered; and the barbell — extreme safety on one side, bounded speculation on the other — replaces forecasting with positioning. The book’s quiet radicalism is that it makes prediction optional.

- Random House published Antifragile on 27 November 2012, with Penguin issuing it in the United Kingdom.
- It is the fourth volume of the Incerto, following Fooled by Randomness (2001), The Black Swan (2007) and The Bed of Procrustes (2010), and preceding Skin in the Game (2018).
- Its central move is to name a property English had no word for — gain from disorder — and to argue that fragility, unlike future events, is measurable in the present.
- The barbell is the book's operational instrument: extreme conservatism across most of a position paired with small, capped-loss exposure to large upside, so the unforecastable tail pays rather than ruins.

- Systems optimised for efficiency shed the slack, redundancy and optionality that absorb shocks, so unusually smooth performance is often evidence of accumulating fragility rather than of health.
