A Quaker meteorologist who pioneered numerical weather prediction turned the same instruments on war: every deadly quarrel he could document from 1820 to 1949, scaled by the logarithm of its dead, compiled across his last decades and published posthumously in 1960 under the editorship of Quincy Wright and C. C. Lienau. Two findings anchor the quantitative study of conflict. Severity follows a power law — a continuous distribution from murder to world war, with the tail so fat that the two largest wars carry most of the century's deaths. Onset fits a Poisson process — war arrivals look random at a roughly constant rate, with no reliable periodicity for a cycle theory to ride. The founding demonstration that conflict is a statistical object, and an armed rebuke to every war-clock ever sold.
