The Book of Enoch
Ancient Hebrew/Ethiopic text, c. 300 BCE — prophecy.
Excluded from the Western canon, preserved by the Ethiopian church: the oldest surviving narrative of technology-transfer catastrophe. The Watchers hand humanity metallurgy, cosmetics and "charms and enchantments" — capability before wisdom — and civilizational corruption follows on schedule. Read structurally, it is an alignment-problem parable with a 2,300-year head start.

The record
- 1 Enoch survives complete only in Ge'ez and remains canonical scripture for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Beta Israel — the communities that never dropped it.
- Eleven Aramaic manuscripts of the text were recovered from Qumran Cave 4 in 1948 and are now held by the Israel Antiquities Authority, with paleography dating the oldest Book of the Watchers fragments to 200–150 BCE.
- The collection has five parts — the Book of the Watchers (chs. 1–36), the Book of Parables (37–71), the Astronomical Book (72–82), the Book of Dream Visions (83–90) and the Epistle of Enoch (91–108) — and the Epistle of Jude quotes it directly.
- The West recovered it through a Ge'ez manuscript brought from Abyssinia by James Bruce and deposited in the Bodleian, from which Richard Laurence published the first English translation, The Book of Enoch the Prophet, in 1821, reissued in 1832 and 1838.
