Psychohistory — Asimov’s fictional science of statistical prediction over populations — is the dream this platform deliberately wakes up from. Hari Seldon forecasts a galactic dark age, seals his projections in a vault, and schedules their public openings decades ahead: a Calibration Ledger with better set design. But the saga’s real lesson is the Mule — the individual whose singular capability breaks every statistical model. The engine quotes Seldon’s ambition and keeps the Mule pinned above the desk: probabilities over populations, humility over singletons.

The record
- The component stories appeared in Astounding Science Fiction between 1942 and 1950 and were assembled into a novel by Gnome Press in 1951; Asimov credited Gibbon's Decline and Fall as the structural source.
- In 1966 the trilogy won a one-time Hugo for Best All-Time Series, beating Heinlein's Future History, Smith's Lensman, Burroughs's Barsoom and Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings; Asimov wrote that he had assumed the award was invented to honour Tolkien and was astonished to win it.
- Psychohistory is framed inside the text as valid only over very large populations and only while those populations remain unaware of the predictions — two conditions no real forecasting programme can satisfy.
- Asimov built his own counterexample into the saga: the Mule, a single mutant whose individual capability invalidates Seldon's plan, is the falsification device the series supplies against itself.
