Octavia E. Butler, 1993 — fiction.
Butler’s 2024–2027 California — climate-strained, insurance-abandoned, gated where it can afford to be and burning where it cannot, with a demagogue promising to make America great again — was assembled in 1993 purely by extrapolating lines already visible in the data: drought curves, wealth concentration, institutional retreat. The novel’s discipline is the platform’s: no magic, no asteroid, just trends compounding past thresholds while everyone waits for the old normal to resume. Its heroine responds by writing falsifiable doctrine and preparing early — the survival playbook rendered as scripture.

The record
- Published in 1993 by Four Walls Eight Windows and set in a California of 2024-2027 assembled by extrapolating drought, wealth concentration and institutional retreat already visible in the early 1990s.
- Butler died in February 2006 without ever placing a book on the New York Times bestseller list; Parable of the Sower reached number fourteen on the paperback trade fiction list for the week ending 29 August 2020, twenty-seven years after publication and fourteen years after her death.
- The frequently cited 'make America great again' demagogue belongs to the sequel, Parable of the Talents (1998), not to Sower — a distinction routinely lost in circulation; Talents won the Nebula Award for Best Novel.
- Butler completed only two books of the planned Parable sequence.
