Popol Vuh — The Council Book of the Kʼicheʼ Maya

The Maya creation cycle is a sequence of failed prototypes: beings of mud that dissolved, then beings of carved wood that walked, spoke and multiplied — but, in Lewis Spence’s early rendering, "had neither heart nor mind" and did not remember their makers. They were destroyed by their own tools and animals in revolt. Read as pattern literature, it is the oldest alignment parable on record: capability without comprehension is not a person, and a civilization that builds articulate wooden people should expect the household objects to file grievances.

The record
- The K'iche' text survives because the Dominican priest Francisco Ximénez transcribed it and translated it into Spanish at Chichicastenango between about 1700 and 1715.
- Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg published the K'iche' text with a French translation in Paris in 1861; Edward E. Ayer bought the Ximénez manuscript from a Paris bookseller in 1887 and brought it to Chicago.
- It is now catalogued as Ayer MS 1515 at the Newberry Library, filed together with Ximénez's other manuscripts.
- Dennis Tedlock's English translation appeared in 1985 and in a revised edition in 1996, and remains the standard English version.
