The Quran
Islamic scripture — the revelation received by the Prophet Muhammad, 610–632 CE — scripture.
The Quran repeatedly instructs its audience to travel the earth and observe the ruins of former civilizations — a standing directive to treat history as evidence. Surah 3:140, revealed after the battlefield setback at Uhud, states that days of fortune are alternated among peoples in turn; Surah 7:34 assigns every community an appointed term. Read here, with respect and no theological claim, as one of the clearest statements in any scripture of rise-and-decline as rotation — the same motion the engine tracks in reserve currencies and hegemonies.
Why the engine keeps this on the shelf
Kept because rotation, not decline, is the engine's default hypothesis for hegemony — the premise under FIN-03 dollar erosion and under the Resonance Index's rivalry component. No exact passage is shelved here: the public-domain English renderings could not be verified word for word, so the claims are paraphrased rather than quoted.
The record
- Radiocarbon analysis dated the parchment of the Birmingham Quran manuscript to between 568 and 645 CE with 95.4% probability, placing it among the earliest Quranic materials known.
- The first translation into any Western language was Robert of Ketton's Latin Lex Mahumet pseudoprophete, completed in 1143 for Peter the Venerable of Cluny.
- The first English version, Alexander Ross's The Alcoran of Mahomet (1649), was made not from Arabic — Ross knew none — but from André du Ryer's French translation of 1647.
- The 1924 Cairo edition, prepared under King Fuad I, fixed the standard printed text now used across most of the Muslim world.
Marked passages
Surah 3:140, summarized: such days of fortune and adversity are alternated among the people, turn by turn — addressed to a community on its losing day.
Rotation of fortune among nations as design, not accident. Dalio's Big Cycle is the same rotation with eight instrumented determinants.
Surah 7:34, summarized: every nation has an appointed term; when it arrives, it is neither delayed nor advanced by an hour.
Appointed terms, read structurally, are duration statistics — the engine expresses the same intuition as cycle-length distributions with confidence bands.
The core claims
- Fortune and reverse are rotated deliberately among peoples, so that no community should read its current standing as permanent.
- Every community carries an appointed term that arrives neither early nor late, which makes duration — not exemption — the thing worth measuring.
