Muqaddimah
Ibn Khaldun, 1377 — cycles.
Arguably the first work of social science. Ibn Khaldun derived a complete mechanics of civilizational rise and fall from a single variable — asabiyyah, group cohesion — and clocked the cycle at three to four generations (~120 years): forged in hardship, spent in luxury, broken by factionalism. He described the taxation decay curve six centuries before Laffer drew it on a napkin.
Why the engine keeps this on the shelf
Ibn Khaldun supplies the mechanism behind the resonance index's DEBT LOAD component and the Asabiyyah Decay framework: the engine reads modern deficit arithmetic against a 1377 curve rather than against a 1990s baseline.
The record
- Ibn Khaldun drafted the Muqaddimah in roughly five months, finishing in Rajab 779 (November 1377) while sheltered at the fortress of Qal'at ibn Salama in what is now Algeria, where he lived from 1375 to 1379.
- In 803/1401, aged sixty-nine, he crossed the lines outside besieged Damascus as a negotiator with Timur and secured a favourable peace for the city — the theorist of conquest bargaining in person with a conqueror.
- Franz Rosenthal produced the first complete English translation, published in three Bollingen volumes in 1958 running to more than 1,500 pages, and still the standard text.
- Arnold Toynbee ranked it the greatest work of its kind ever created by any mind in any time or place; Ronald Reagan invoked Ibn Khaldun by name on eleven separate occasions, including an October 1981 defence of rate cuts, and Arthur Laffer has credited him with the original tax-rate/revenue insight.
Marked passages
It should be known that at the beginning of the dynasty, taxation yields a large revenue from small assessments. At the end of the dynasty, taxation yields a small revenue from large assessments.
The fiscal decay curve, 1377. Late-stage polities extract more and collect less — the Pattern Engine reads modern deficit arithmetic against this exact shape.
The goal of civilization is sedentary culture and luxury. When civilization reaches that goal, it turns toward decay and corruption, and begins the last phase of its existence.
Comfort as terminal symptom. The Asabiyyah Decay framework in the codex is this sentence, instrumented.
