The Fourth Turning

An 80-year saeculum of four generational "turnings" — High, Awakening, Unraveling, Crisis — reconstructed across five centuries of Anglo-American history. Prior Fourth Turnings: the Revolution, the Civil War, the Depression-and-WWII sequence. Written in 1997, the book put the next Crisis trigger around 2005–2010 and its climax in the 2020s. The trigger arrived in 2008, on schedule.
Why the engine keeps this on the shelf
The saeculum is the longest-period hypothesis the engine carries, so it is used as a phase prior on the Loom's society strand and as the timing frame against which sealed entries in the society domain are dated — never as a forecast in its own right.
The record
- Published in 1997, it was the third statement of the Strauss–Howe generational theory, following Generations (1991), and placed the next Crisis catalyst around 2005 give or take a few years.
- Steve Bannon's 2009 documentary Generation Zero was built largely on Generations and The Fourth Turning, with Neil Howe interviewed at length; the book has been a Bannon touchstone ever since.
- Neil Howe published a sequel, The Fourth Turning Is Here, in 2023, dating the current Crisis from the 2008 Great Recession and projecting its resolution in the early 2030s.
- William Strauss died in 2007, so the 1997 forecast has been carried, tested and revised in public by a single surviving co-author — an unusually clean provenance for a long-horizon prediction.

The core claims
- Anglo-American history moves on an eighty-year rhythm of four generational moods, and the Crisis phase is where a society rebuilds its public institutions under duress rather than by argument.
- Generations are shaped less by their own decade than by the phase of the cycle they spent childhood in, which is why the same event registers as formation for one cohort and as disruption for another.
