The Revolt of the Masses
José Ortega y Gasset, 1930 — cycles.
Writing in 1930, between the two catastrophes he was diagnosing, Ortega identified the mass-man — the satisfied inheritor who enjoys a civilization he did not build, assumes its machinery is natural, and feels entitled to judge what he has not troubled to understand. He named bolshevism and fascism as two costumes of the same figure, and direct action — the abolition of negotiation — as its political signature. His constructive forecast also resolved: he argued Europe's exit was unification, a quarter century before the Treaty of Rome. Toynbee's creative-minority failure and Turchin's elite dynamics describe the same transition from the other side of the ledger.
Why the engine keeps this on the shelf
Ortega supplies the demand-side account that Toynbee and Turchin describe from the elite side, so the engine reads him into the Loom's society strand and into the institutional-capacity term of the resonance index — systems fail at the upkeep layer, and upkeep is what the mass-man declines to notice.
The record
- The book began as a series of articles in the Madrid daily El Sol in 1929 and was published as La rebelión de las masas in 1930.
- The authorised English translation of 1932 appeared without a named translator and is still the version quoted in English.
- Friedrich Hayek quoted and cited it favourably, and it remains by a wide margin Ortega's most widely distributed work.
- Ortega died in 1955, but because the Spanish text was published in 1930 it entered the US public domain on 1 January 2026 — this shelf could not have quoted it a year earlier.

Maintenance as the invisible load-bearing activity. The engine scores institutional-capacity decay for the same reason Ortega insisted on the artisan: systems fail at the upkeep layer first.
