How the engine got there
This is the lowest number on the sheet, and the reasoning is a chain of prerequisites rather than a single doubt. A crewed Mars landing requires, largely in sequence: a human-rated Starship; orbital refuelling demonstrated reliably and repeatedly; closed-loop life support proven across a six-to-nine-month transit; radiation protection adequate for that exposure; crewed entry, descent and landing on Mars, never attempted by anyone; and surface operations with no possibility of rescue. Each is a major programme in itself and several cannot be run in parallel. The comparison that disciplines the number is our own lunar seal: CAL-16 puts 68% on no uncrewed Starship reaching the Moon before 2028 — an unmanned landing on a body three days away, on a programme carrying NASA funding and national urgency. If the uncrewed lunar step is that uncertain on that timescale, a crewed Martian landing five to seven years out sits several orders of difficulty beyond anything the same programme has yet demonstrated. The historical anchor is worth stating plainly: no human being has travelled beyond low Earth orbit since December 1972. Every crewed mission for more than fifty years has stayed a few hundred kilometres up. This seal is mostly about the date — we expect humans reach Mars, and SpaceX is the most plausible organisation to do it — but seven years compresses a programme that has not yet flown a person beyond LEO into less time than Apollo required with an entire national economy behind it.
What counts as correct
Read on the generous end of the speaker’s own range: CORRECT if at least one living human being has landed on the surface of Mars on or before 2033-12-31, confirmed by the operating organisation and corroborated by independent tracking. A one-way or non-return mission counts. Crew in Mars orbit without a surface landing does not.
